Cheyenne + Brent | Columbia, MO Maternity Session
As a maternity photographer Columbia MO families trust, documenting the weeks right before a baby arrives is some of my favorite work. Cheyenne and her husband Brent are expecting their first boy in June, and she wanted images that actually captured this season – not just a standard bump photo, but something they’d look back on and still feel. We planned a session that would move between my natural light studio and the outdoor space on the property, starting inside and finishing out in the sun.
Studio Maternity Session in Columbia, MO
We started inside with couples portraits in front of my hand-painted backdrop. Cheyenne wore a white smocked tulle dress that photographed well against the warm neutral tones of the studio. The ruffle cap sleeves and tiered layers moved well and gave the images a soft, airy quality without being overdone.
Brent joined her for this portion of the session, and from the first frame it was clear they didn’t need much direction. He stood behind her with his arms wrapped around her, kissed the top of her head, and rested his hands on her belly next to hers. That’s the kind of moment I’m always watching for, when a couple stops thinking about the camera and just turns toward each other. It happened fast with these two.
Window Portraits
After the couples portion, I moved Cheyenne over to the large windows in the studio for solo portraits. The light coming through those windows in the afternoon is diffused and directional, which works particularly well for maternity portraits. It shapes the belly without harsh shadows and gives the skin a warmth that’s hard to replicate any other way.
She leaned against the window frame and looked down, and the light came straight across her face and her bump. Those portraits ended up being some of the strongest images from the session. She also has a ring worth noticing (a cushion-cut diamond with a halo setting) and it caught the light beautifully in those frames.
Outdoor Maternity Photos
We finished outside, where the white stone balustrade on the property gave us a clean, bright backdrop with the green trees behind it. The shift in environment gave the gallery a different feel from the studio work, with more movement and energy from the direct sunlight.
Brent came back out for more couples portraits. They held hands, looked down at her belly, and at one point were clearly sharing a private joke between them. I also got Cheyenne alone out there, moving in the dress, holding her belly, smiling down at it. Those solo portraits outside have a completely different quality from the window shots inside, and the two sets balance each other well across the full gallery.
A Little Boy on the Way
Cheyenne is in her third trimester and carrying with confidence. Brent was attentive and relaxed the whole time, and the images from this session reflect two people who are genuinely ready for what’s coming in June.
That’s what I’m after as a maternity photographer Columbia MO. Not just documentation of a pregnancy, but a record of where two people were right before their family grew, how they stood together and how it all felt in those last weeks of waiting.
